Fulvic acid content in Shilajit: what the percentages actually mean

Fulvic acid percentages for Shilajit cannot be compared without knowing the measurement method, because the common procedures produce completely different values for the same material. Claims of 80 to 85 percent without a stated method are marketing, not measurement. Our current batch measured 69.8 percent fulvic acid by dry weight, determined titrimetrically, commissioned from an accredited laboratory in Germany.

Hardly any number is promoted as aggressively in the Shilajit market as fulvic acid content: 75 percent, 80 percent, 85 percent, sometimes "85+". What is almost always missing is the one piece of information that would make the number verifiable: the measurement method. This article explains why the same sample yields completely different percentages depending on the procedure, why very high claims without a stated method are not reliable, and how to tell a credible figure from a marketing number.

What fulvic acid is

Fulvic acid belongs to the humic substances, complex organic compounds that form when plant material is broken down microbially over long periods. Humic substances are classified by solubility: fulvic acids remain soluble in both acidic and alkaline solutions, humic acids dissolve only in alkaline conditions, and humins do not dissolve at all.

In Shilajit, fulvic acid is a main natural component, alongside humic acids, minerals and trace elements. The content varies from batch to batch with region, collection site and purification. That is why every credible figure is tied to a specific batch, never to the product "as such". You can read more about the other components in our guide.

Why the same sample can produce three different values

The core problem: "fulvic acid content" is not a uniformly defined quantity. Several established procedures exist, and they measure different things.

All three procedures are legitimate in themselves, but they are not comparable with each other. The same sample can come in at 20 to 30 percent gravimetrically, 50 to 60 colorimetrically, and 70 or more by Lamar. Whoever quotes only the number and omits the method takes away your ability to interpret the value.

This is exactly where the market bluff comes from: a vendor quoting a Lamar number looks "better" on the label than a vendor quoting a gravimetric number, even though the jars may contain the same material. The market rewards the method with the highest numbers, not the most accurate measurement.

Why 80 to 85 percent without a method is not reliable

In the German market you will regularly find claims of 75 to 85 percent fulvic acid, occasionally more. What stands out:

  • The measurement method is almost always missing.
  • A batch number the value refers to is usually missing as well.
  • A viewable lab report backing the value is the absolute exception.

Pure, purified Shilajit resin always contains humic acids, minerals, trace elements and residual moisture besides fulvic acid. A fulvic share of 85 percent of dry weight would leave only 15 percent for everything else combined. Such values arise in practice only from procedures that systematically measure high, or from simply adopting a number that was never measured for the batch in question.

This does not mean every vendor with a high number is cheating. It means: without method, batch and report, you cannot know. And a claim that cannot be verified is not information, it is advertising.

Our value: 69.8 percent, determined titrimetrically

In our current batch HM-SH-25-BLY-1159, the analysis measured 69.8 percent fulvic acid by dry weight. It was determined titrimetrically, an established wet-chemistry procedure, commissioned from an accredited food laboratory in Germany together with the heavy metal and microbiology testing. You will find the measured value, the method, the analysis date and the batch number in the batch datasheet, which you can match directly against the number on your jar.

Two things we say openly:

First: 69.8 percent is the value of this batch, not "the value of our product forever". Natural resin varies, and every new batch is measured and published anew.

Second, and here we apply the same standard to ourselves as to everyone else: the fulvic acid determination is a parameter not covered by the laboratory's accreditation scope, while the heavy metal and microbiology analyses of our batch are. There simply is no uniformly standardised measure for fulvic acid, which is what this whole article is about. That is why the method is stated next to our value, in the article and in the datasheet, so you can assess the number instead of having to believe it.

How to check any fulvic acid claim in 4 steps

  1. Method stated? Does the percentage come with the procedure used? Without it, the value cannot be interpreted.
  2. Batch reference? Does the value refer to a specific batch number that also appears on the jar? A value without a batch could come from any sample.
  3. Independent, accredited lab? A manufacturer's own measurement is not evidence. What counts is an analysis by an independent accredited laboratory.
  4. Basis clear? Credible figures state the basis, usually percent of dry weight. Without it, it is unclear what the number even refers to.

How the value in our batch datasheet comes about

So that our number is traceable, here is the path from jar to published value:

  1. A sample is drawn from the finished, purified batch before it goes on sale.
  2. The sample goes to an accredited food laboratory in Germany, which analyses fulvic acid, heavy metals and microbiology of that same batch.
  3. The laboratory issues its report. We transfer its values unchanged into our batch datasheet: batch number, analysis date, fulvic acid by dry weight, heavy metal values alongside the EU limits, microbiology.
  4. The batch datasheet is published and stays permanently linked to that batch. A new batch means a new analysis and a new datasheet.

Why an own datasheet instead of the original report: the laboratory we commission does not contractually allow its report to be published or its name to be stated. The measured values themselves we may and want to disclose, and that is exactly what we do, for every batch.

Common misconceptions about fulvic acid

"More percent means better Shilajit." Without the method, the percentage says little about the product and a lot about the chosen procedure. An honest gravimetric value can sit below an advertised Lamar value and still describe the same or a better resin.

"Fulvic acid content is a fixed product property." Shilajit is a natural product. The content varies between batches, sometimes considerably. A vendor advertising the exact same percentage for years either does not measure per batch or publishes a number unrelated to the current goods.

"A high fulvic value proves purity." Purity and fulvic content are two different questions. Whether a batch is clean is shown by the heavy metal and microbiology values, not by the fulvic share. "Percentages from different vendors can be compared." Only if both state the same method and the same basis. In practice hardly any vendor states both, which makes the label comparison simply impossible.

What this means for your buying decision

When comparing Shilajit, do not treat the fulvic acid value as a ranking. A vendor with an honestly measured 65 percent can have a better product than one advertising 85. What matters is whether the value is documented: method, batch, accredited laboratory, viewable document.
