Shilajit resin or capsules: the honest comparison
Resin is the original format and the only one you can sanity-check at home, but it tastes intense and is dosed by eye. Capsules are convenient, taste neutral and portioned exactly, yet they hide the material behind a shell and carry carriers and processing aids depending on the product. The same yardstick applies to both: without a batch number and a matching laboratory analysis, no purity statement can be verified.
The question comes up on almost every purchase: the sticky resin in a glass jar, or the convenient capsule? The honest answer is inconvenient, because it is not "resin wins". It depends on a decision you make first. Do you want to be able to judge the material yourself, or do you want to measure nothing and taste nothing in the morning?
This comparison walks through the points that actually matter day to day: verifiability, additives, dosing, taste, price per daily serving, travel and storage. It ends with a recommendation per user type rather than a blanket winner.

Both formats come from the same raw material. Capsules are usually made from dried and milled material that is then filled. So the difference is not in the origin but in what happens between the raw material and your kitchen table.
Verifiability: the real difference
Shilajit is a natural product from rock crevices in high mountains. How clean it ends up in the jar is decided during collection, filtering and batch testing. That is exactly why the question of how much you can still follow yourself is not a side issue.
With resin the material lies open in front of you. Three simple observations show whether it behaves as it should: it dissolves in warm water without a gritty residue, it turns hard and brittle in the fridge, and in the warmth of your hand it softens and becomes pliable again. With capsules that layer disappears entirely. You see neither colour nor consistency, and a powder cannot be judged by its behaviour. What remains are two documents: the ingredient list and the laboratory report for the batch in your hand. Neither is worth less than a home check, but both require the seller to publish them in the first place.

Additives and the ingredient list
Pure resin needs nothing but itself. A capsule product needs more by construction:
- a shell, usually hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or gelatine
- often a filler, so the capsule can be filled evenly
- often an anti-caking agent, so the powder flows through the filling machine
These substances are permitted and unremarkable in themselves. The interesting question is the ratio. Ingredient lists are sorted by weight, so the order tells you whether Shilajit makes up the bulk or turns up only after two other ingredients.
Watch for the words "extract" and "extraction ratio" as well. An extract is a concentrated preparation whose quantity cannot be compared one to one with an amount of raw resin. If there is no statement of how much pure Shilajit each capsule contains, you can neither dose it nor compare the price. That is the most common blind spot when buying capsules.

The advantage of the capsule is reproducibility: every portion is the same, with no scales and no guesswork. The advantage of resin is fine control. In practice, resin looks like this: take a pea-sized amount with a small spoon, drop it into warm, not boiling water and stir briefly until it has dissolved. That takes under a minute, but it is still an extra step in the morning.
Taste and handling
Resin tastes unmistakable: earthy, smoky, bitter. Some people like exactly that, others never get along with it. If you want to soften the taste, dissolve the resin in tea, in milk or in warm water with a little lemon. None of that changes the base note.
Capsules sidestep the question completely. The shell only dissolves later, so nothing happens in the mouth. For anyone with a pronounced sense of taste, that is the real reason to reach for capsules, and it is a perfectly legitimate one.
Two small handling details rarely get mentioned in advance. Resin sticks to the spoon, which a metal spoon and warm washing-up water solve. And the rim of the jar should stay clean so the lid keeps closing properly.
Price per daily serving, not per pack
The pack price is worthless when comparing the two formats, because fill quantity and portion size are defined differently. It only becomes comparable per daily serving.
For resin the calculation is short, here with our own jar as the worked example:

On subscription the same jar is 22.49 EUR, roughly 0.45 EUR per day. For capsules the arithmetic works differently: you need the Shilajit content per capsule in milligrams and the recommended number of capsules per day. From that you get the amount per day, and from that how long the tin lasts. Only that figure can be set against resin.
Two pitfalls here. First, if the tin states only the capsule fill and not the Shilajit content, the calculation cannot be done at all, and that in itself tells you something about the seller. Neither the softening in summer nor the hardening in the fridge is a defect. It is precisely the behaviour you would expect from this material, and it is part of the home check. That said, if you spend every day on a train or in a hotel, you will take the capsule more reliably, and taking it consistently beats owning the theoretically more verifiable format.

There is no reason to place one format morally above the other. There is only one point on which both must be judged just as strictly, and that is the proof.

- Check whether a batch number is printed on the pack. No number, no purchase, whatever the format.
- Open the analysis and match the number in the document against your product.

- Work out the price per daily serving, shipping included.
- Think about where you will actually use the product: kitchen or rucksack.
- Watch for claims the rules do not allow. They say a great deal about how carefully a seller works.

Better in the sense of more verifiable, yes. Resin sits in front of you, so you can judge consistency, solubility and behaviour in cold and warmth yourself. Do Shilajit capsules contain additives?
As a rule yes, for technical reasons. That includes the shell made of cellulose or gelatine plus possible fillers and anti-caking agents such as rice starch, silicon dioxide or magnesium salts of fatty acids. The ingredient list is sorted by weight, so it shows you how much of the content is actually Shilajit.
How much Shilajit is in one capsule?
The pack states the amount per capsule, usually in milligrams, together with the recommended number of capsules per day. What matters is the difference between the total capsule fill and the actual Shilajit content. If only a total amount is given with nothing said about the extract, the decisive information is missing.
Which is cheaper, resin or capsules?
They only become comparable per daily serving, never per pack. For resin, divide the pack price by the grams and apply your daily amount. Can I travel with resin?
Yes. The glass jar goes into hand luggage or well padded into a suitcase. Resin softens in warmth and firms up in cold, which is normal and not a defect. If you are on the move every day with no spoon and no water to hand, capsules are the more practical option.
Can I fill resin into capsules myself?
Technically possible, practically tedious. Resin is sticky and temperature sensitive, weighing small amounts without fine scales is imprecise, and opened empty capsules draw moisture. If the taste is what you want to solve, dissolving the resin in warm water or tea is the simpler route.
