Shilajit side effects: the current state of knowledge
There is little solid data on side effects of Shilajit: the number of controlled human studies is small and the observation periods are short. The problems that are actually documented in the literature almost always concern contaminated or unpurified material, above all heavy metals and microbial load, not the purified resin itself. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and anyone with a medical condition or on regular medication should check with a doctor before taking it.
Anyone picking up Shilajit for the first time sooner or later asks about side effects. The answer is less comfortable than most product pages admit: there is little solid data, and the problems that are actually documented nearly always come down to the material sold, not to the resin as such. This article sorts out what is known, what is not, who should be cautious, and how to bring the risk down as far as a natural product allows.
Side effect or intolerance: the term
"Side effect" is a term from medicines regulation. It describes an unwanted effect of a drug that was systematically recorded in approval trials and listed in the patient leaflet with frequencies. Shilajit is not a medicine in Germany or the wider EU; it is sold as a food supplement and therefore as a food. Foods have no approval trials and no leaflet with frequency figures.
What exists instead are three kinds of information: traditional use over very long periods, a modest number of scientific investigations, and case reports in the medical literature. For everyday purposes the word intolerance usually fits better than side effect: the question is whether your body gets on with the product and the amount, not a pharmacological list of adverse reactions.
What the research shows, and what it does not
The scientific evidence on Shilajit is limited. The number of controlled human studies is small, participant numbers are low and observation periods are short. Many investigations come from cell cultures or animal experiments, which do not translate directly to humans. Systematic long-term safety data spanning years does not exist.
That cuts both ways. Anyone claiming Shilajit has "no side effects" is making a statement no study supports in that form. Anyone warning of specific side effects of the purified resin can equally hardly point to systematic data. The honest wording is this: in the available investigations, no typical, regularly occurring complaints were described for purified resin at the usual amounts, but the window of observation is narrow.
What the literature does show very clearly is a different pattern: the documented cases of harm around Shilajit and similar Ayurvedic preparations concern contamination. It is therefore worth separating the risks cleanly into two groups.
Two sources of risk that often get mixed up

The distinction is not academic. A case report of lead poisoning after an Ayurvedic preparation says nothing about the tolerability of purified Shilajit; it says something about a contaminated batch. Conversely, the best lab analysis in the world does not protect you from individually not tolerating a product. Both questions need their own answers.
Risk from the material: heavy metals
By far the best documented problem area is heavy metals. Shilajit forms in direct contact with rock, and rock contains geogenic elements such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. Whether and how much of that ends up in the finished product depends on collection region, filtration and processing. The medical literature contains case reports of lead poisoning from Ayurvedic preparations from uncontrolled sources, and consumer protection bodies have warned about such products for years.
In the EU, binding maximum levels apply to food supplements under Regulation (EU) 2023/915. Our current batch was analysed by an accredited food laboratory in Germany:

Risk from the material: microbiology and raw resin
The second problem area is discussed less often but is just as real: microbial load. Raw Shilajit is not a finished product but a mixture of resin, rock fragments, plant material and water. In that state it can contain moulds, yeasts and bacteria. Traditional preparation, dissolving in water, filtering and gentle thickening, exists precisely to remove those components and make the resin shelf-stable.
Raw material sold without that step should not be consumed, however "original" the marketing sounds. A credible product documents the microbiological testing of the finished batch. For our current batch the results are: salmonella not detectable, E. coli below 10 CFU/g, yeasts and moulds below 10 CFU/g. Risk from the material: fillers and unknown additives
A third point concerns the market more than the resin: where a raw material is scarce and expensive, it gets stretched. Stretched or imitation "Shilajit" can contain components that have nothing to do with the resin. Someone who reacts to such a product may be reacting to an additive that is declared nowhere. The answer is the same here: batch number, lab analysis, traceable origin. A product without those three is a lucky dip, and the side effects of a lucky dip cannot be assessed.
Risk from the resin: everyday tolerance
That leaves the purified resin itself. There are no frequency figures here, but a few sober observations that apply to concentrated natural products in general:
- Taste and texture: Shilajit resin tastes bitter, smoky and mineral. Some people find that unpleasant, especially neat. Dissolved in water or a warm drink it is easier to take for most.
- Stomach: as with many concentrated substances, taking it on an empty stomach can individually feel unpleasant. If you are sensitive, take the resin with a meal.
- Individual reactions: with any natural product, intolerances or allergic reactions are possible in individual cases. There is no reason to assume Shilajit is exempt.
- Amount: most reports of feeling unwell that circulate in user accounts involve too large an amount or too fast a start. A pea-sized piece is already more than many people expect.

Dosage: why more is not better
Under the German food supplements ordinance, every food supplement must carry a note that the stated recommended daily amount must not be exceeded. That is not a formality. Every additional amount of resin also means an additional amount of every substance it contains, including the traces you do not want. The EU maximum levels for heavy metals are designed around the usual consumption amounts of the product group, not a multiple of them.
For resin, a usual daily portion is about 400 mg, so a 20 g jar lasts around 50 days. Doubling the portion does not just halve how long the jar lasts; it doubles the intake of every single constituent. There is no reason to do that.
Who should be cautious
For some groups the data is particularly thin or the chance of an unwanted reaction is inherently higher. For them the rule is: check with a doctor first, then decide.

The note on children, by the way, is not something we added: "keep out of reach of young children" is a mandatory statement on every food supplement sold in Germany.
Interactions with medicines
There is hardly any systematic research on interactions between Shilajit and medicines. That does not mean there are none; it means nobody has reliably ruled them out. For you it means: if you take medication regularly, Shilajit belongs on the list of preparations you discuss with your doctor or pharmacist, exactly like any other food supplement. Never take a natural product as a replacement for a prescribed treatment, and never stop a medicine on your own initiative.
What to do if you experience complaints
If complaints appear after taking it, the sequence is simple:
- Stop taking it. Do not reduce, pause, so that the connection can be assessed at all.
- Observe. If the complaint subsides after stopping, a connection is possible. If it stays, the cause is probably unrelated to the product and needs medical attention anyway.
- For clear or persistent complaints, seek medical advice. Take the jar or at least the batch number with you. The batch datasheet with the lab values makes the assessment easier.

- Look for individual values for lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, and for microbiological testing.
- Start with a small amount and do not exceed the usual daily portion.
- If pregnant, breastfeeding, ill or on medication, check with a doctor first.
- If complaints appear: stop, observe, seek medical advice, and tell the vendor.
- Keep out of reach of young children.
