How to take Shilajit resin: step by step

Shilajit resin is taken once a day: lift a pea-sized amount of roughly 300 to 500 mg out of the jar with the spoon, stir it into a cup of warm water, tea or milk until it has dissolved, and drink. The liquid should be drinking-warm, not hotter than about body temperature. Afterwards close the jar tightly and keep it cool, dry and away from light.

Shilajit resin looks impractical at first glance: a dark, tacky mass in a jar, with no fixed portion and no capsule shell. In practice, taking it is a two-minute job once you know how much to use, what to dissolve it in and how warm the drink may be. This guide walks you through it step by step and answers the questions that come up most often in daily use: temperature, choice of drink, time of day, a sticky spoon and storage.

What you need

Taking Shilajit resin needs nothing that is not already in every kitchen:

Item Purpose Note
Jar of resin The portion Our 20 g jar comes with a dosing spoon
Small spoon Taking the portion Dry and clean, so no moisture gets into the jar
Cup Dissolving Around 150 to 250 ml is plenty
Warm liquid The solvent Water, tea or milk, drinking-warm
Precision scale (optional) Calibrating your eye once 0.01 g resolution; kitchen scales are too coarse

The scale is not a must. It only helps at the start to get a feel for how small a pea-sized amount really is. How to calibrate your eye and where the usual daily amount comes from is covered in detail in our guide on dosage.

Step 1: take the portion

Open the jar and lift out a pea-sized amount of resin with the dry spoon. That is roughly 300 to 500 mg, on average about 400 mg. A pea is about 7 to 8 mm across; most people take too much the first time, because the resin is dark and compact and a small amount does not look like much.

At room temperature the resin is tacky and stretchy, it pulls threads and sticks to the spoon. That is normal. You can wipe the thread off on the rim of the jar or twist it off with the back of the spoon. If the resin is very soft, for instance in summer, putting the jar in the fridge for ten minutes helps. If it is very hard because the jar was kept somewhere cool, the warmth of your hand around the jar is enough to make it pliable again.

Close the jar tightly straight after taking the portion. The less air and moisture get in, the more the resin stays as it was over its whole shelf life.

Step 2: prepare the liquid

Fill a cup with warm liquid. Three options have proven themselves:

Drink Characteristics Who it suits
Warm water Neutral, the resin dissolves fully, the taste comes through unfiltered Anyone who wants to know the taste and judge the resin itself
Tea Herbal or black tea partly covers the earthy note Anyone who wants to soften the taste
Warm milk or a plant-based drink Creamy texture, the bitterness moves into the background Anyone who finds the taste too intense

What matters is the temperature, not the drink. The liquid should be drinking-warm, meaning hand-warm to about body temperature. Boiling water is not needed: purified resin dissolves completely in warm liquid, and we recommend not heating it above body temperature. If you brew tea, let it cool to drinking temperature before the resin goes in.

Cold liquid, by contrast, works poorly. In cold water the resin sits at the bottom as a lump and dissolves only very slowly. Whether a particular drink changes how the constituents are absorbed has not been studied; the choice is a matter of taste and habit.

Step 3: dissolve and drink

Drop the resin into the cup with the spoon and stir. In drinking-warm liquid a pea-sized amount usually dissolves completely within one to two minutes. The water turns golden brown to dark brown depending on the amount, and no particles are left behind. That behaviour is also part of the authenticity check: genuine, purified resin dissolves in warm water without residue, as described in our guide on how to recognise genuine Shilajit.

If the resin sticks to the spoon, simply leave the spoon in the cup and keep stirring. The warm water lifts it off by itself. Then drink. A second portion on the same day is not intended; the usual practice is once a day.

Alternatively you can take the amount neat and let it melt on the tongue. That is quicker, but more intense in taste, because nothing softens the earthy, bitter character.

Step 4: look after the spoon and the jar

Rinse the spoon under warm water and dry it before it goes back into the jar. A wet spoon carries water into the resin, and moisture is the one thing you really should avoid with a natural product that stays in use for months. Close the jar tightly and put it back in its place.

Time of day

Morning or evening is a question of routine, not of amount. Most people take their portion in the morning with the first warm drink of the day, because that is where it most easily becomes a habit. Others prefer the evening with a cup of warm milk or herbal tea. There is no solid data that favours one time of day over the other.

The only thing that matters is that you stay with one portion per day and do not spread the amount over several peas across the day. If you want to switch the time of day, you can do so at any point; the daily amount stays the same. Whether on an empty stomach or with a meal also depends on individual tolerance. If you have a sensitive stomach, try taking it with breakfast first.

Storage: cool, dry, dark

Shilajit resin is a shelf-stable natural product, but it reacts to temperature and moisture. The rules are simple:

Condition Recommendation What happens otherwise
Temperature Room temperature, not right next to the stove or a radiator In heat the resin becomes soft and runny, in cold it becomes hard and brittle
Light In a cupboard or drawer The black glass jar already protects it; avoid direct sun anyway
Moisture Dry spoon, lid always closed tightly Water carried in can change the resin at the surface
Shelf life Note the best-before date on the jar Batch number and date are printed on every jar

The fridge is not needed. The resin becomes hard and brittle in there, which makes taking a portion harder but is no loss of quality: at hand warmth it becomes soft again. If you find it too runny in summer, you can chill the jar briefly now and then, but it should not live in the fridge permanently.

A 20 g jar lasts about 50 days at roughly 400 mg per day, so it stays in use for almost two months. Over that time a dry spoon and a tightly closed lid matter more than any other measure.

Common mistakes

Most mistakes have nothing to do with the resin and everything to do with impatience and judging by eye:

  1. Too much at once. A pea is smaller than you think. If you empty the jar clearly faster than in about 50 days, you are dosing too high. How long the jar lasts is an easy check.
  2. Water too hot. Boiling water is neither needed nor intended. Drinking-warm is enough for the resin to dissolve fully.
  3. A cold drink. The resin stays as a lump. Dissolve it warm first, then let it cool if you like.
  4. A wet spoon. Carries water into the jar. Always take the portion dry.
  5. Starting with the full amount straight away. A small start with a rice-grain-sized amount over the first few days lets you observe tolerance. What may come up is covered in our guide on side effects.
  6. Unknown quality. Taking it at all assumes the resin has been tested. What was measured in our current batch is listed under lab values and in the batch datasheet.

Capsules and powder

If you use capsules or powder instead of resin, you skip the dissolving. Capsules are swallowed with water, powder is stirred into a drink; in both cases the manufacturer fixes the serving. The only way to compare that with resin is the Shilajit content per serving on the label, not the number of capsules. The differences in verifiability, price per day and everyday convenience are covered in our comparison of resin versus capsules.

Who should ask a doctor first

The routine described here is for healthy adults. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and adolescents, and anyone with a chronic condition or on regular medication, there is not enough data. For them the rule is: check with a doctor first, then decide. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet.

In short

  1. Take a pea-sized amount, roughly 300 to 500 mg, with a dry spoon.
  2. Stir it into a cup of drinking-warm water, tea or milk for one to two minutes until dissolved.
  3. Drink it, once a day, at whatever time suits you.
  4. Rinse and dry the spoon, close the jar tightly.
  5. Store cool, dry and dark; no fridge needed.
  6. Use the jar's lifespan as a check: about 50 days per 20 g at 400 mg a day.

Our resin ships with a dosing spoon and the batch number printed on the jar, so you can look up the lab values for your own jar. The jar costs €24.99, which works out at €0.50 per day. You will find the 20 g jar in the shop.

Frequently asked questions

How do you take Shilajit resin?

Take a pea-sized amount of roughly 300 to 500 mg out of the jar with the spoon supplied, drop it into a cup of warm water, tea or milk and stir until the resin has dissolved completely. In drinking-warm liquid that usually takes one to two minutes. Then drink it, once a day, and never more than the daily intake stated on the label.

How warm should the water be for Shilajit?

Drinking-warm, which means roughly body temperature to hand-warm. Boiling or very hot water is not needed, because purified resin already dissolves in warm liquid, and we recommend not heating the resin above body temperature. In cold water it dissolves only very slowly and sits at the bottom of the cup as a lump.

Can I take Shilajit neat, without dissolving it?

Yes. A pea-sized amount can be left to melt on the tongue straight from the spoon. Many people find the earthy, bitter taste too intense that way and prefer to dissolve it in a drink. The amount does not change either way: it stays at roughly 300 to 500 mg per day.

How should I store Shilajit resin?

Cool, dry and away from light, with the lid closed tightly. Room temperature in a cupboard is enough. In the fridge the resin becomes hard and brittle, in heat it becomes soft and runny; both are normal and neither is a quality defect. Always use a dry spoon so that no moisture gets into the jar.

What if the resin sticks to the spoon?

Just leave the spoon in the drink while you stir. The warm liquid lifts the resin off by itself. Alternatively dip the spoon briefly in warm water and dry it before taking the portion, and the resin will cling less. A sticky, stringy resin at room temperature is typical for the natural product.

Who should not take Shilajit without medical advice?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and adolescents, and anyone with a chronic condition or on regular medication should check with a doctor first. There is not enough data for these groups. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet.
