Shilajit cycle: duration, breaks and how long a 20 g jar lasts

There is no set course length for Shilajit, neither from authorities nor from robust studies. In practice people take it over several weeks, and a 20 g jar lasts about 50 days at a usual 400 mg per day, which makes a natural stage followed by a break. Nobody can honestly name a point at which an effect sets in, because no health claim is authorised for Shilajit in the EU.

"Course" or "cycle" sounds like a fixed programme with a start, an end and a result. With Shilajit the reality is plainer: there is no official course length, no proven break pattern and no day by which something has to happen. What there is: a usual daily amount, a jar whose range you can calculate exactly, and a few sensible reasons to plan your intake in stages. This guide does the maths and answers the questions people most often ask Google and AI chats about a Shilajit course.

Is there a recommended course length?

No. In Germany, where we are based, there is neither an official daily dose for Shilajit nor a recommended duration of use. The only binding figure is the recommended daily intake on the label, which German food supplement law (Nahrungsergänzungsmittelverordnung) requires on every pack and which must not be exceeded. How long you take that amount is not regulated anywhere.

Traditional use of Shilajit and Mumijo often works in cycles: a period of intake followed by a pause. But no particular rhythm is scientifically better founded than another. Anyone selling you an exact course length as a necessity is selling you a habit as a fact. For the background of that tradition, see our guide to Mumijo.

How long does a 20 g jar last?

The most honest course length is the range of your jar. For resin, the usual daily amount is 300 to 500 mg, on average about 400 mg, which is one pea-sized portion a day. How to hit that amount without a scale is explained in the Shilajit dosage guide. For a 20 g jar that gives:

Daily amount Range of a 20 g jar Cost per day (single jar €24.99)
300 mg about 66 days under €0.50
400 mg about 50 days €0.50
500 mg about 40 days over €0.50

At 400 mg a day, one jar is a stage of just over seven weeks. That is a practical unit: long enough to build a steady routine, short enough to make a deliberate decision afterwards.

Work out your own duration

The formula is simple: jar contents in milligrams divided by your daily amount in milligrams. 20 g is 20,000 mg. At 400 mg that is 20,000 divided by 400, so 50 days. If you start with a smaller amount in the first week, as the dosage guide suggests, your first jar lasts a few days longer.

Capsules and powder

Capsules and powder work the same way, but with the Shilajit content per daily serving rather than the total weight of the pack. Fillers and capsule shells do not count. If a label says 60 capsules with a daily serving of two, the pack lasts 30 days, no matter how much Shilajit is actually inside. How the forms differ in content, cost per day and verifiability is covered in resin or capsules.

When does Shilajit start to work?

This is the most common question about a course, and the answer is uncomfortable: no point in time can honestly be named. No health claim for Shilajit is authorised in the EU under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. So no seller may promise an effect, and therefore no day on which it begins.

The few small human studies on standardised Shilajit extracts ran for several weeks to about three months. That describes how those studies were designed, not a schedule for you. They were small, mostly used one specific extract, and the German consumer advice centres (Verbraucherzentrale) rate the evidence as insufficient. For a fuller picture of the research, read what doctors say about Shilajit.

What you will actually notice

You will certainly notice the bitter, smoky taste, the sticky texture and how your stomach handles the portion. More on that in our guides to the taste and to possible side effects. Anything beyond that is subjective, and without a comparison a subjective impression is hard to tell apart from how you slept, your day, or your expectations.

A common mistake: after two weeks of "not noticing anything", people double the portion. That brings no recognisable advantage, but it raises the intake of everything the resin contains, including the traces of heavy metals present in any natural resin, and it halves how long the jar lasts. Stay with the amount on the label.

Do breaks make sense?

There is no robust data for any particular break pattern, either for or against. Still, there are good reasons to plan intake in stages and pause after a jar:

  1. Limit exposure. EU maximum levels for heavy metals in food supplements apply per kilogram of product. Taking breaks means you take in less of everything in the resin over a year. The measured values for our batch are on the lab results page.
  2. Take honest stock. A break is the simplest test of whether you miss it or whether it has simply become a habit.
  3. Keep an eye on cost. Continuous use at 400 mg a day comes to a little over €180 a year. With breaks, you decide afresh each time whether that is worth it to you.

How long the break lasts is your call. Many people pause for a few weeks before starting the next jar.

Planning a course with the subscription

If you plan intake in fixed stages, you can also get the jar on subscription. It costs €22.49 per jar instead of €24.99, which at 400 mg a day is €0.45 per day, and you choose between two delivery intervals:

Delivery interval Matches a daily amount of roughly Note
every 6 weeks just under 480 mg continuous use at the upper end of the usual amount
every 2 months just over 330 mg continuous use, or 400 mg with a break of just over a week

You can pause or cancel the subscription at any time. If you take longer breaks, simply buy single jars instead.

Who should ask a doctor first

The usual daily amount and any thoughts on course length apply to healthy adults. For pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and teenagers, and people with chronic conditions or on regular medication, there is not enough data. For them: check with a doctor before starting, and if in doubt, skip it. If you have any complaints while taking it, stop.

In short

  1. There is no official course length; only the daily amount on the label is binding.
  2. A 20 g jar lasts about 50 days at 400 mg a day, a practical stage.
  3. Nobody can honestly promise a point at which Shilajit works.
  4. Noticing nothing is not a reason to take more.
  5. A break after each jar limits exposure and keeps your review honest.

The daily routine step by step is in our usage guide, the right time of day in morning or evening. You can get the 20 g jar here, with a batch datasheet for the lab values of your batch.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Shilajit course last?

There is no binding duration. Many people use the jar as the unit: a 20 g jar lasts about 50 days at roughly 400 mg per day. When it is empty is a good moment for a break and an honest review of whether you want to continue.

How long do you have to take Shilajit before it works?

There is no honest answer in days or weeks. No health claim is authorised for Shilajit in the EU, so no seller may promise a point in time at which something shows. The few small human studies ran for several weeks to about three months, but that only describes how those studies were set up and is not a promise of any effect.

How do you know Shilajit is working?

What you will certainly notice is the taste, the smell and how your stomach handles the portion. Any effect beyond that is not established well enough to be promised, and a subjective impression is hard to separate from chance without a comparison. Noticing nothing after one jar is not a reason to take more.

When should you take Shilajit capsules?

With capsules, follow the recommended intake on the label, including any timing it gives, such as with a meal. If it says nothing, pick a fixed time of day that fits your routine. For the length of a course, what counts is the Shilajit content per daily serving, not the number of capsules, because that also determines how long the pack lasts.

Should I take a break after a Shilajit course?

There is no robust data for any particular break pattern. A break after one jar is still a sensible habit: it keeps your yearly intake of everything the resin contains lower and lets you check honestly whether you miss it. Anyone on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding should clear it with a doctor first.
